Walnut shells are primarily used, alone or in combination with other shaped materials, to regain or cure lost circulation. The fine variant can be maintained in a circulation system without bypassing the shale shakers; however, medium and coarse grades will be removed with cuttings on the shakers. Their hardness renders walnut shells resistant to deformation by hydrostatic pressure. Consequently, plugging or bridging efficiency is maintained.
Walnut shells also exhibit high chemical resistance and are unaffected by pH and temperature, making them useful inoil-based drilling fluids as well as all aqueous systems.
Secondary uses include torque reduction and as a scouring agent to clean balled bottomhole assemblies.
The typical treating levels for prevention range from 2 to 5 lb/bbl (5.7 to 14.3 kg/m3). For more severe losses, when the material is pumped as a pill or squeeze, levels from 10 to 50 lb/bbl (28.5 to 142.7 kg/m3) are recommended. Severity of loss and the amounts of other materials incorporated in the mix will dictate the appropriate concentration.
Walnut shells should be stored in a dry location, away from sources of heat or ignition.

Field experience, however, has indicated that the chance of such media actually depositing on hot components is fortunately very remote. Cleaning & Deflashing with walnut shell media is used to remove grime, debris and grease from engines, valves, turbines, molds and tools. Walnut shell media can be used for cleaning and polishing metal parts in vibratory tumblers. It is usually treated with a polishing compound to enhance the result. When walnut shell media is mixed to a polishing compound, dirty metal parts are left clean and shiny.

When used as a polishing media, walnut shell grit is extremely durable, angular and multi-faceted, yet is considered a ‘soft polishing media’. Walnut shell polishing media is an excellent replacement for sand (free silica) to avoid inhalation health concerns.
Like other soft media, Walnut shell cleans and removes matter from surfaces without damaging underlying material. Jewelers use walnut shell media treated with rouge in both tumbling and vibratory applications for polishing gems and fine jewelry.
